The first fact you need to know is that your keywords don't matter.Well, they don't matter anywhere near as much as something else... What counts is what you have to bid on that keyword to get what you might call your ideal position in the set of ads Google shows for that keyword.I don't care if you find a keyword with 12 words that gets 4,587 searches a day.If you have to bid fifty cents or a dollar on it to get it to show up in the top 10 ads, you'll probably lose money. Big money; while you are there to make money on the internet.
Back to that "long tail" example we hinted at before...You can find lots of long tail keywords that have much lower competition than something like "diet". And you definitely should search for those keywords. But what you need to find are keywords with THREE characteristics:
- They have lower competition
- They still get a healthy number of clicks for relatively low bids
- Those relatively low bids will let you start with your ad in the optimal position
We'll talk about that last one in the future. But you can see that most people focus on just one aspect of the long tail phenomenon--the lower competition part--and that ends up crushing them. They have a runaway campaign and they quit because they run out ofmoney. But Google doesn't care, because they already got your money.
They don't give refunds for runaway campaigns. That's why we spend so much time telling you the science behind picking Google's pockets. In the next posts, I'll tell you about the second dirty little Google secret. Actually, that one is one of most insidious ways Google lines their pockets at your expense.
